Alberta Reveals Priority Candidates for Permanent Residence in 2026

Published: January 2026 By Nick Imoru (RCIC)
Alberta has officially announced who it is prioritizing for provincial nomination in 2026 under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) — and the message is clear:
workers already contributing to Alberta’s economy and filling key labour shortages are at the front of the line.
For 2026, the federal government has granted Alberta 6,403 nomination spaces, a significant increase compared to earlier years. As of mid-January, Alberta has already begun issuing nominations under this allocation.
Alberta’s Top Priority Sectors for 2026
In 2026, AAIP will focus its invitations and nominations on candidates working in key economic sectors, including:
  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Aviation
  • Agriculture
  • Rural Alberta communities designated under the Rural Renewal Stream
While these are Alberta’s primary focus areas, the province has confirmed that it may still issue invitations outside these sectors when needed.
Where Most Nominations Are Going
More than half of Alberta’s 2026 nominations (over 53%) are allocated to the Alberta Opportunity Stream, which mainly benefits temporary foreign workers already working in Alberta.
This continues a strong trend seen in 2025, where over 85% of all nominations went to workers already living and working in the province.
Breakdown of Key AAIP Streams for 2026
Some of the major nomination allocations include:
  • Alberta Opportunity Stream: 3,425 nominations
  • Rural Renewal Stream: 1,000 nominations
  • Dedicated Health Care Pathways: 500 nominations
  • Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway: 600 nominations
  • Tourism and Hospitality Stream: 150 nominations
  • Entrepreneur Streams: 90 nominations
Alberta has also made it clear that these numbers can be adjusted during the year based on labour market needs.
Extra Federal Spaces: Doctors and Francophones
In addition to Alberta’s 6,403 regular nominations, the federal government has reserved 10,000 extra immigration spaces nationwide for:
  • Practice-ready physicians, and
  • French-speaking candidates
Nominations issued under these initiatives do not count toward Alberta’s regular AAIP allocation. This means Alberta may nominate more than 6,403 people in total in 2026.
To qualify:
  • Physicians must have a job offer in an eligible medical occupation and meet Alberta’s licensing requirements.
  • Francophone candidates must work in an AAIP-eligible occupation and demonstrate NCLC 5 in all French language skills.
What This Means for Applicants
This update confirms that Alberta is prioritizing applicants who:
  • Are already working in Alberta
  • Have valid job offers
  • Work in high-demand sectors
  • Are willing to settle in rural communities
  • Can strengthen Alberta’s healthcare system, technology sector, or skilled trades
Candidates outside these areas may still be eligible, but competition will be strongest within priority sectors.
Planning Is More Important Than Ever
AAIP draws are not scheduled and selection is not based on score alone. Alberta considers multiple factors to meet its economic needs, and draw parameters are not publicly disclosed.
This makes strategic planning and proper stream selection critical for anyone considering Alberta as their pathway to permanent residence.
